Points of Interest in Placer County
Auburn State Recreation Area
Empire Mine in Grass Valley preserves one of California’s oldest, largest, and richest gold mines, which operated for more than a century. Today, visitors can explore restored mine buildings, the owner’s stately cottage and gardens, and miles of forested trails that reveal remnants of the mining era. Guided tours explain the mine’s history, geology, and the lives of the workers who once labored deep underground.
The park combines history with natural beauty. Shaded picnic areas, dog-friendly trails, and seasonal events like living history days make it a destination for both education and recreation. Photographers and history buffs, in particular, appreciate the preserved machinery and architecture that transport visitors back to the early 1900s.
